Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell brought new levels of sophistication to stealth-action gaming. You play NSA Black Ops operative Sam Fisher, a so-called Splinter Cell, undertaking fearsomely dangerous missions on your own. Except this time around, Fisher is not entirely on his own: the game deck's unique Bluetooth wireless technology has enabled two unique multiplayer modes, Sniper and C-operative. In the latter, you will have to work together with a friend to overcome the enemy. With 10 different universes and a bristling array of gadgetry, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell immerses you in a rich and challenging gameplay experience.

Entering like a ghost, you'll have to rely to the stealth and make a good use of your surrounding to avoid direct conflict and end up outnumbered. The missions will follow pretty much the same storyline as the original game for PC/GC/PS2/XBOX with the emphasis on being a complete platformer with here and there some first-person sniping job to do.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Ubisoft today announced Splinter Cell 3 (working title), the third blockbuster in the Splinter Cell franchise, will officially be called Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - Could the name be any longer???. In addition to the PC, the game will be available on the Xbox, as well as on the N-Gage platform, published by Gameloft. Details on other platforms will be forthcoming

Tomb Raider

Lara Croft explores ancient ruins across the globe in her quest to find the Scion, a relic from the lost continent Atlantis. She soon learns she's not the only one after the Scion. This version of Tomb Raider includes at least three never-before published levels exclusive to the Nokia N-Gage game deck.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a skateboarding simulation in which you control a famous skate star around 3d environments. Each game area contains a plethora of objects like ramps, rails, and half-pipes which can be used to perform tricks. Each trick you perform earns you more points for your score.

The game is divided into two types of levels. In the first, you skate around locations like a mall, a city street, or a warehouse. In each of these areas, there are 5 goals for the you to complete. Some goals involve obtaining a high score, others smashing objects, and some collecting objects. For every goal you complete, you earn a video tape. By collecting enough video tapes, you unlock levels and skateboards for you to use. There are 6 levels like this. The second type of level is a competition. You get to make 3 timed runs through a skate park, and attempt to get the highest score possible. If you do well enough, you will beat the scores of the computer controlled skaters and win a medal. There are 3 levels like this.

There are nine real life pro skaters you can choose to play as, including Tony Hawk himself. Each skater has their own signature moves that earn you big points if pulled off successfully.

Master signature pro moves. Engage in head-to-head competition. Explore fully skateable worlds while you practice and master your moves. Show off or admire your expertise over and over again with instant replay mode. And the killer soundtrack will inspire you to create some signature moves of your own.

Catan

Work Your Brain With Catan On The N-Gage Platform

August 19, 2004 -- Today, Nokia announced the first Capcom title for its N-Gage game portfolio. Catan, a brain sport strategy game, will appeal to a wide range of gamers who will be inspired by the possibility to engage in up to four person mobile multiplayer gaming via Bluetooth wireless technology.

Catan gamers will compete with each other to build roads, settlements and cities. Instead of colonizing land and enslaving natives, gamers will occupy new land to develop into communities with the aim of expanding their civilization and squeezing out competitors. Catan offers a balanced mix of tactic, strategy, interaction and - of course - luck.

"The Catan board game has a loyal following worldwide and we have every reason to believe that this new mobile multiplayer version of Catan for the N-Gage platform will be very popular as well," said Pasi Pölönen, Director, Games Publishing, Nokia. "The N-Gage platform gives an opportunity for both existing and new Catan fans to engage in a powerful, strategic mobile gaming experience."

"Catan is perfectly suited to be launched as the first Capcom release on the N-Gage platform", says Kuniaki Tanaka, General Manager of Mobile Business Department of Capcom. "The mobile multiplayer features will make Catan fans work their brains even harder to accomplish their mission and grow their civilization."

The N-Gage Arena provides tips and hints to gamers as they roll the dice to get the commodities they need to build new roads, cities and settlements. Catan is expected to be available on the N-Gage platform in early 2005.

Bounce

Sometimes simple games are the most enjoyable. Games like Tetris and Pong have given credence to the idea that form follows function. At first glance Bounce is far from impressive. It has very simple graphics and a equally simple control scheme. You simply manipulate your red rubber ball by choosing the direction you want to go, and making it bounce by pressing the "1" key. You can't get much more simple than that.

Atari Retro

The software collection contains a complete Atari 2600 emulation engine using original cartridge ROM images to give it that classic original feel, with game console quality. Titles include: Adventure, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong and Yar's Revenge. Each has been reproduced with absolute authenticity; powered by a sophisticated emulation engine designed specifically for mobile use. The product is officially branded and licensed in collaboration with Atari.

Somewhere in that half-ruined darkness is his sister, a woman Ward believes is responsible for this disaster; a woman who warned him this would happen…

Alien Front

In Alien Front, you can take on the role of an army tank commander to defend the Earth against invading aliens, or switch sides and take command of a futuristic 2-leg walker, a 4-leg spider walker, or an anti-gravity hovercraft vehicle. Alien Front also has a two-player deathmatch mode via Bluetooth wireless technology and the possibility to share game statistics with the world via the N-Gage Arena

The Revolution Has Begun

With the news that the Crazy Frog ringtone has outsold Coldplay and hit number one in the charts, we are witnessing a revolution not unlike the launch of CD's back in the 1980s. Although the Coldplay track is kick-ass, the Crazy Frog ringtone is funny and addictive and plenty of people (I guess) are happy to pay to annoy the hell out of me on the plane/train/bus/starbucks line. Welcome to the future baby!

WATCH DOG the Advertising Standards Authority has said that it has had a record 800 complaints about the Crazy Frog ring tone advertisements. The UK has been flooded with the ads for the ring tone which is based on the tune from the Beverly Hills Cop movie.

Unfortunately the thing refuses to croak. It is the first ring tone to reach number one when it went on sale as a CD. However, the ads with the catchy tune and the animated frog wearing a broad smile that accompanies it on videos and TV adverts is apparently driving Britons nuts. According to Reuters, the Advertising Standards Authority watchdog said that most people thought that the advertisement for the ring tone was on too often and was driving them mad.

Previously the Authority had to wrestle with complaints about the frog’s genitals which are apparently all too visible. Yet, despite all the complaints, the fierce Watchdog has refused to tell the makers to hop it.

Apparently there is a new single in the works called Kill the Frog by Frog Must Die, which is due to be released later this month, and designed to set the record straight. This all reminds us of the days of Jive Bunny, who in the 1980s highlighted the need for a more aggressive use of myxomatosis. We not sure what kills frogs, other than stamping on them, which seems a bit humane given the noise of the ring tone

Nokia and SmallBall launch SNAP Mobile Soccer for Java

Nokia and SmallBall.com has announced the launch of SNAP Mobile Soccer, the newest exciting member of Nokia's fast-growing Java game portfolio. SNAP Mobile Soccer players can challenge real people in single matches or compete in professional or user-created leagues. And they train, play and watch the games on mobile while on the go, or on PC when at home. You need never leave home without SNAP Mobile Soccer.

SNAP Mobile Soccer, supported by the Nokia SNAP (Scalable Network Application Package) Mobile platform, enables customers to do much more than just play their teams against other teams. With SNAP Mobile Soccer you can actually train individual players to form the strongest team. Team owners can observe and evaluate every one of their players and their abilities, then train them based on their unique strengths and weaknesses to create a winning team. With proper attention to their growing soccer skills they will soon be competing at higher and higher levels.
SNAP Mobile Soccer creator Ed Annunziata says: "The better you know your players, the better you can train them." But he cautions that it works both ways: Just as in life, your players must work to improve their skills or risk losing them. This requires regular practice and a good dose of personal attention. "The more you love your players," Annunziata says, "the more they'll return the love by showing their winning ways."

Now you can coach your players to kick farther, run faster, change directions quicker, guard the goal better - these and all the other specialized skills that go into building a winning team. Fourteen players are included with each team, and with a nod to the worldwide popularity of women's soccer, women's teams as well as men's teams are available. Name your players, customize their uniforms, create your own formations - SNAP Soccer lets you make all the important team decisions.
Each member of the team arrives with average playing skills, but with his own unique "digital DNA." Study each player and quickly identify the special promise inherent in each member of your team. Their training and success are in your hands alone. The harder you train and the smarter you coach them, the faster they develop into the team you always wanted to create.

Teams can be trained and managed with mobile phones or PCs, and matches can be seen on mobile handsets as well as full screen on any compatible Web-enabled PC. Your team "lives" on a server, so you can play opposing teams even while their owners are otherwise occupied.

Aimed at a target audience of both male and female players age 16 to 40, SNAP Mobile Soccer is expected to be available through selected cellular phone service providers by late 2005. A number of Nokia and non-Nokia handsets will support the game.

SNAP Mobile Soccer features:
- Cross-platform game play
- Playback of live and recorded matches
- Chat and discussion forums
- User-created multiplayer leagues
- Season results, records and statistics

SNAP Mobile Soccer is a truly groundbreaking new Java game where players use "artificial life" technology to train their team members and pit them against other teams in cross-town or worldwide matches. Each member of your team has the ability to learn distinct soccer skills and - with regular practice and personal attention - retain those skills while learning new and better skills.

Here is a quick guide to the stops on your global adventure:

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Developer: Torus Games
# of Players: 1-2
Category: Action
Release Dates
N Amer - 03/31/2005

2005 has had a lot of firsts. Two of them have to do with the biggest game series to bear the Tom Clancy name: Splinter Cell. This was the first time in three years that a new Splinter Cell was not unveiled at E3. This is also the first time that gamers will get the chance to play a true, three-dimensional Splinter Cell on a portable game console. It's not for PSP, and although a Nintendo DS version is expected to follow, this version was made for the least likely platform: N-Gage.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for N-Gage is Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for Xbox but in a small, easy-to-carry package. The graphics aren't as good, and there isn't any analog control. Oh well. Great games were made long before the analog stick arrived.

The very first thing you will notice when you play this game is the absence of hand-drawn imagery. Sam Fisher isn't the small, cartoon character you met a couple years ago. The Sam Fisher you meet in Chaos Theory is big. He's made up of many polygons (or as a math professor might say, polynomial-gons), taking up a good portion of the screen. The same can be said when speaking about his villains, and any innocent bystander that might get in the way.

Chaos Theory may be a game of spying and espionage, but that gameplay is based around a third-person shooter environment. There are a lot of "WOW" moments to be had, but my favorite was seeing how flexible the camera was. The angle can be changed and the camera will circle Sam at the press of a button. It isn't always necessary to manage the camera – there were times when it stayed in place, and times when the game repositioned the camera on its own.

Torus Games, the developer of this ambitious and prestigious game, has pulled an unknown amount of power out of the N-Gage. In short, it looks better than the first Tomb Raider. Environmental realism is top-notch. Sam's moves are just like the ones he performs on Xbox.

I know that this is based on the advanced Xbox and PC versions of Chaos Theory. Putting that aside, when you play the first Splinter Cell for N-Gage and then play Chaos Theory, it's like playing Metal Gear for the NES before playing Metal Gear Solid for the PSone. The transition is unbelievable.

N-Gage hasn't had a game this complex before, it hasn't had a game that is wholeheartedly a next-gen title. It had Tony Hawk and Tomb Raider, but what console hasn't had those?

The controls are better than every third-person shooter I've played on the N-Gage. Players can move in any direction, exploring and sneaking the way that Sam Fisher was meant to. His patented gun-drawn camera is there, shifting from the third to a near first-person view when activated. Sam can crouch, crawl and lean up against walls. Eliminate the target with stealth and precision; shoot him with a silenced gun, or quietly sneak up on him from behind. To pull the trigger or snap a neck – what a tough decision.

Chaos Theory is big on Bluetooth multiplayer, but mobile phone signal limitations make it impossible to have true multiplayer over the N-Gage Arena. Hopefully one of your friends has an N-Gage. If he or she does, and both of you have a copy of the game, launch the co-op mode for an exercise in teamwork.

This is one mission Solid Snake hasn't had to worry about since he works alone. Learn to take advantage of your ally in Chaos Theory. While one player distracts an enemy, the other can sneak into a guarded (previously guarded) area. Take enemies hostage and use 'em as shields when the others are alerted of your presence. Team up for stronger firepower in deadly gunfights. These are the most obvious things you can do with your teammate. Discovering the ones that aren't so obvious – that's when the real fun begins.

N-Gage doesn't have too many games that can make people drop what they're doing to go buy the system immediately. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory has that power. It exceeds expectations by becoming a must-play for every Tom Clancy fan. If you already have an N-Gage, stop wasting time and buy the game already. If not, now’s the time to consider getting one.
Review Scoring Details for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Gameplay: 9.0
Unbelievably close to the console versions. The levels, the controls, the freedom of movement – we knew N-Gage had some power, but I don't think anyone ever thought it was capable of producing a gameplay experience like this.

Graphics: 8.0
We can't go hog-wild for pixelated N-Gage games now that the Nintendo DS and PSP have arrived. Pixelation aside, Chaos Theory is a gorgeous game. They stuff more detail into that tiny N-Gage screen than any game before it. Mark my words: YOU WILL BE AMAZED!

Sound: 8.0
Intense themes of espionage that only the Splinter Cell composers could produce.

Difficulty: Medium/Hard
Being a brilliant secret agent is harder than it looks.

Concept: 8.0
Chaos Theory’s N-Gage-exclusive content includes event uploading/downloading and a ranking system. I’m not sure what the events will be (I guess we have to wait to find out), but the ranking system is hardly a selling point. That said, Chaos Theory’s concept gets two thumbs up for being the first of its kind on N-Gage.

Multiplayer: 9.0
Two-player co-op; four-player deathmatch!

Overall: 9.0
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is too good to be true. It makes the 2D version, which was acceptable at the time, seem like a total waste in comparison. N-Gage has had some stellar niche titles, but when it comes to the biggest and baddest games, there haven’t been any that were more fun to review than this.

Glimmerati

Publisher: Nokia
Developer: Bugbear Entertainmen
Category: Action
Release Dates
N Amer - 07/18/2005

Glimmerati is one of the coolest racers I've played in a long, long time. Its premise of racing celebrities didn't sound too intriguing, and the restricted overheard view – that didn't sit too well either, not when we have the best Ridge Racer iteration running on the PSP.

My fears kept getting drowned out by the sound of praise that poured out of anyone who got the chance to try it. By the time I finally got a serious impression of it (at this year's E3) I, too, found myself overflowing with praise. And now that I have the final version running in my game deck, praise is all I've got to give.

Glimmerati is one of those rare games that takes a look at the current technology and says, "We could do this or this, but let's do this." The third "this" being the unexpected, unconventional choice. For starters the top-down view -- it seems like something you'd get from an N-Gage game because the system isn't as powerful as its competitors. In truth they could've made an in-the-car view, but that would have removed the game's uniqueness.

Taking us back to the days of the Micro Machine racing games, Glimmerati has a semi-retro appeal. The remarkable thing is that it doesn't copy the Micro Machine games in any way. The vehicles feel small due to the camera position, but the environments come across as being big and lively. Traffic interferes whenever it pleases, having a "I have the right to be on the road too!" attitude. That makes each race a lot more interesting (and a lot more dangerous!). Up until now I don't think any of the N-Gage racing games even acknowledged that traffic exists.

Avoiding collisions is no small task. Crashing won't total your fancy sports car, though it will slow you down immensely. In other words, get good at steering, swerving, and become a master at last-minute evasions.

While you're at it you might as well become a master of cornering and high-speed maneuvering. Glimmerati's controls are excellent, but the courses, while also impressive in their design, include countless twists, turns, and valuable shortcuts that could lead you to a quicker victory. Or, in some cases, leave you in a ditch. Then the paparazzi catches up to you, take a bunch of pictures, and by sunrise you're on the cover of a mock magazine with a hot supermodel. The cover story: you're in love and you're having a baby!

That's not exactly what happens, but the game does have a cool sense of humor, and a killer lineup of objectives that massively increase the difficulty. Glimmerati is a true racing game, but its requests can be very unusual. Pick-ups and drop-offs – they're not the most fun thing to do. But when a rich businessman asks you to take his wife, or a hot model, or anyone else to and from a particular location, the gameplay doesn't veer off course. Being a chauffer merely means that you have cargo onboard. It's still a race to the finish line (in this case, a specific location). If a time limit isn't given then chances are you'll have to race someone, like the evil press. Should they catch up to you the race could end and then you'd have to start over.

The solution to the game's challenges almost always lies within your map. There's really no way of knowing where you'll end up unless you check and study the map frequently. How's that for originality? I can't think of the last racing game I played where that was necessary. It applies a Grand Theft Auto quality that isn't commonly found in racing games. It's usually reserved for driving games like Crazy Taxi.

In between the main story mode are challenges that can reward you with additional cars and other goodies. These challenges are all racing-based. One of the more unique challenges lets you take control of a special rocket vehicle. This vehicle is probably the fastest in the game, surpassing 400mph! Controlling this fuel-guzzling beast is extremely difficult, making it next to impossible to defeat the 13-second record the rocket scientist asks you to beat. The only way to do that (presumably) is to pick up speed on the first lap, in which case you'll probably make the run in about 20 seconds. After that it's all about hugging the center of the track while doing your best not to hit the sides. Good luck gamers! You'll need it.

Determined to engross and be successful at doing so, Glimmerati is an incredible N-Gage racer. I'd recommend it on any platform – DS, PSP or Gizmondo – but it was designed exclusively for the N-Gage. The challenging, arcade gameplay and the absolute wealth of objective types (and the way the game masks the concept of racing by asking you to avoid the press, etc.) make Glimmerati more than a glimmer of hope for N-Gage users. It's a hardcore game that all developers should look up to and work their butts off to compete with.

Review Scoring Details for Glimmerati

Gameplay: 8.9
Unbelievable. So much from such a little package. The cars look tiny and, during some of the crashes, get tossed around like Micro Machines. But the gameplay is as big as an in-your-face racer created for a home console. The tight controls, stellar course layout, and the excellent sense of speed come together for an experience that will not be forgotten.

Graphics: 8.6
Most impressive. Aside from clipping (which occurs every now and then), Glimmerati is smooth, smooth, smooth. Tiny, hard-to-notice details (like the intricacy of other vehicles) highlight the larger objects like buildings, streetlights, varying terrain. No one's going to walk away unimpressed.

Sound: 7.9
The sound quality isn't the best, but wow! There's something really special about the music. It's somewhat techno-ish, and a bit orchestral ... Like a cross between a good RPG and a good racing game (if the sounds of those games could be merged). Glimmerati's voice-acting is weird at times but makes the story a lot more entertaining than if they had just included text.

And just to make something clear to eavesdropping publishers: it took more than that to make the sound interesting! The majority of Glimmerati's voice actors know how to recite lines with different levels of emotion. It's far from perfect but it's better than most. You got that, copycats?

Difficulty: Medium/Hard
Glimmerati gets really tough really quick. The paparazzi are fast! And your opponents quickly up the ante as well. It'll take a good deal of practice to get through some of the challenges. Look forward to a fairly long and highly enjoyable journey.

Concept: 8.0
The first guilty pleasure video game? Glimmerati's great gameplay is a grand distraction, but there are several suggestive moments (and suggestive images) that caused the ESRB to say, "Wait a minute, this racer needs an 'M.'" No gore, no violence, just sexual images and references.

Multiplayer: 8.0
Multiplayer for up to four local players! Now if only I could find someone who has an N-Gage...

Overall: 8.9
Nokia had a strong showing at E3, making it really difficult to predict which game would turn out to be the best. No one can make that final call until all the titles showcased are released, but of all the games to come out thus far, Glimmerati earns the gold trophy. The gameplay is unbeatable. You really can't find anything like it anywhere else. That's where this game succeeds the most - it's different. Good different.
